Star Flower Pouch

Hi StitchyMites,

I promised you a cute little pouch and here she is! This is the Star Flower Pouch. I am actually teaching it as a Zoom class for the Atlanta Modern Quilt Guild this coming weekend, and I designed it especially for the, so it's a special little present to you lovely Smites just for being you.

Of course it doesn't need to be a pouch - it can be the side of a bag, the centre of a cushion, the block in a quilt.... its entirely up to you! If you don't want it for a pouch simply cut the background fabric to whatever size suits your planned project.

Star Flower Pouch

You will need:

  • Two pieces of fabric for the front and back of the pouch, cut to 8 1/2” x 10 1/2”

  • Two pieces of fabric for the lining of the pouch, cut to 8 1/2” x 10 1/2”

  • Two pieces of fusible fleece, or quilt batting, cut to 8 1/2” x 10 1/2”

  • Fat 8th (or fusible 1/4” bias tape) for stems

  • Scraps of green for leaves

  • Scraps for flowers

  • 9"metal zipper or a 11" plastic teeth zipper*

  • Light, sturdy cardboard such as a postcard

  • Small amount of kitchen aluminium foil

  • Liquid applique glue such as Roxanne’s

  • Silver gel pen

  • Milliners needles #10 or #11

  • Fine cotton thread to match your appliqué fabrics. I use 80 weight but 50 weight is fine

  • Scissors for paper and fabric

  • Small, sharp scissors such as thread snips for cutting into V points

Templates:

Cut one of each of the templates, except the circles, from the sheet from template plastic, or laminate. Cut them right on the line.

Cut one of each of the circles from the piece of cardboard

Method:

Take one of your pouch pieces ready for the appliqué. You can always choose to appliqué both sides of the pouch!

Use the templates to help you to position the stars with enough room onto the background fabric.

Once you have the template where you want it, use a pencil or the gel pen to draw a single line downwards for the stems. Put the two stars, their stems and leaves on first and then add the circle flowers. The templates will also help you to make sure that you have left enough space to fit those in. Position and stitch all of the flowers and stems BEfORE you add any leaves, as they can just be filled in wherever and however many you want them.

Stitch your appliqué. If you are new to my appliqué technique, use the code STARFLOWER at checkout for 15% off my on demand Needleturn Applique class at my website.

For instructions on how to make the panel into a pouch, you can follow the Window Pouch tutorial - which includes instructions on rounding the corners - from this earlier StitchyMites post.

*I used a 9" metal zip that can't be trimmed down (as it's metal), but if you are going to use a zip with plastic teeth, get a longer one, like 11" so that you can trim it off easily as shown in the tutorial.

Happy Sewing

Sarah
