There’s a beautiful memory behind this simple quilt. When I was a tiny little girl, about two or three years old, I would go to my grandma’s house for the day, so my mum could have a break and look after my baby brother. We did all sorts of different things together, but my favourite thing was rowing our boats.

Grandma would announce that it was ‘a nice day to row our boats to Bobbin Head’, and we would go straight to the kitchen and spend the morning making ribbon sandwiches and baking a sultana slice for the journey. I was allowed to help with everything but the knives.
At lunchtime, we would collect my grandpa from the study with his hat and his pipe, and head out to the picnic blanket on the front lawn and eat our picnic.

After lunch, my marvellous grandma would get out two battered cardboard boxes, we would both climb into one—with grandma’s floral skirts hitched up around her knees—and proceed to row our ‘boats’ and have an adventure.

This quilt is about my trips to Bobbin Head with my grandma and her beautiful ribbon sandwiches.
