This quilt is very special, and although I designed it, I didn’t actually make it. Each block was made for my friend Amy by quilters and bloggers from all over the world. Some have signed their blocks and others haven’t.

When Amy’s husband Dan passed away in 2011, I wanted to do something for her that would be like a big hug from the blogging community. Amy is much loved the Blog-iverse wide as Mrs Schmenkman Quilts, and I knew there would be plenty of people out there who wanted to help.

I hoped perhaps I would get enough blocks to make a quilt for Amy’s bed, and figured I would make more myself if I didn’t. I hadn’t reckoned on the extraordinary generosity of the quilting community, who flooded enough blocks into my mailbox to make a quilt for Amy’s king bed AND her daughter Anabel’s bed (shown here), and who also donated the backing, batting (wadding), and machine quilting for both quilts. Craft community magic at work. I designed the Bass Line block to be like the bass line on a stereo—Dan was a writer who was especially known for his work about techno music. I have included the pattern here by popular request.

Finished size: Queen-size (double) quilt, 70 1⁄2 x 90 1⁄2 in. (179 x 230 cm)
